THIS IS PUMA: A complicit apartheid sporting company

PUMA shareholders are meeting in Germany to talk profits and celebrate its 75th anniversary.

Palestinians instead are marking 75 years of apartheid Israel’s oppression and dispossession.

PUMA supports Israel’s illegal settlements on stolen Palestinian land. Palestinians and people of conscience around the world are calling on PUMA to end its complicity.

On May 5, 2021, the very same day that PUMA shareholders met to discuss profits, Israeli soldiers shot and killed 16-year-old Saeed Odeh, a promising young Palestinian football player.

On May 11, 2022, the very same day that PUMA shareholders met to discuss profits, Israeli soldiers shot and killed another 16-year-old Palestinian footballer, Thaer al-Yazouri.

This year, as PUMA shareholders prepare to meet to discuss profits, Israel has just carried out yet another military assault on besieged Palestinians in Gaza.

These are not just tragic coincidences and they occur with PUMA’s complicity. They are a testament to just how often Israel’s apartheid regime kills Palestinians, young and elderly, athletes and artists, scholars and students, professionals and artisans, mothers, fathers, sons and daughters. In just the past 15 years, Israel has killed more than 6,000 Palestinians and injured over 145,000.

Israel’s apartheid regime robs Palestinian land and resources; bombs Palestinian cities; demolishes Palestinian homes; incarcerates Palestinian political prisoners; restricts Palestinian access to water, farm land, and electricity; destroys Palestinian agriculture; and prevents Palestinian movement.

Palestinians are now facing the escalating violence and dispossession of Israel’s most far-right, racist and fundamentalist government ever.

PUMA claims it has a “devotion to universal equality.” That can’t be true as long as PUMA is complicit in Israel’s apartheid regime.

PUMA is the main sponsor of the Israel Football Association (IFA). The IFA includes football teams in illegal Israeli settlements on stolen Palestinian land in its leagues and advocates to maintain them. Israeli settlements constitute a war crime according to international law.

As PUMA celebrates its 75th anniversary, Palestinians are marking 75 years since the Nakba, or catastrophe, when between 750,000 and 1,000,000 Indigenous Palestinians were forcibly driven from their homes by pre-state militias and, later, the Israeli army.

The Nakba has never ended. It is ongoing, and PUMA is complicit in Israel’s violence and dispossession of Palestinians that are at the core of this ongoing system of oppression.

PUMA’s support for a brutal apartheid regime that guns down young footballers has led sports teams such as the Oakland Roots, Luton Town, and Qatar Sports Club to drop PUMA. More than 138,000 people around the world have joined the call from 235 Palestinian sports teams to boycott PUMA until it stops supporting Israeli apartheid. Complicity in apartheid is the antithesis of “devotion to universal equality.”

I join them in calling on PUMA to end its shameful contract with the Israel Football Association.

Until then, we will continue to Boycott PUMA.
