WMO | State of Global Climate 2021
Record atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations and associated accumulated heat have propelled the planet into uncharted territory, with far-reaching repercussions for current and future generations. This report finds the past seven years are on track to be the seven warmest on record, based on data for the first nine months of 2021. A temporary cooling “La Niña” event early in the year means that 2021 is expected to be “only” the fifth to seventh warmest year on record. But this does not negate or reverse the long-term trend of rising temperatures. Global sea level rise accelerated since 2013 to a new high in 2021, with continued ocean warming and ocean acidification. The report combines input from multiple United Nations agencies, national meteorological and hydrological services and scientific experts. It highlights impacts on food security and population displacement, harming crucial ecosystems and undermining progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals.WMO Report

THE MOST IMPORTANT NUMBER IN THE WORLD: CLIMATE CLOCK

KNOW THE NUMBERS
We are in a Climate Emergency, but there is still time to avert disaster if we take bold, immediate action at the speed and scale necessary – beyond what politicians have deemed politically possible. The next ~7 years is humanity’s best window to enact bold, transformational changes in our global economy to avoid raising global temperature above 1.5ºC, a point of no return that science tells us is likely to make the worst climate impacts inevitable.
The Deadline and Lifeline on the Climate Clock tell us what we need to do, by when. They are arguably the most important numbers in the world. It’s worth understanding why. SEE THE SCIENCE
INSTALL IN EVERY CITY
We offer the #ClimateClock to the worldwide climate movement as an internationally coordinated, participatory project.* We encourage you to erect an iconic climate clock in your own locale — joining Berlin, New York, Seoul, Rome and Glasgow. These climate clocks are drawing the world’s attention to the urgency for action. But if our species is to survive, we need a constant, public reminder of our climate Deadline (and solution Lifelines) — everywhere!
